Peterborough has a distinguished history of military service that goes back to the Upper Canada Rebellion of 1837. Area residents established the 1st Volunteer Militia Company of Infantry, Ashburnham Volunteer Militia Company of Infantry, Peterborough Rifle Company, 57th Regiment, 3rd The Prince of Wales Canadian Dragoons. Peterborough men and women served in the South African (Boer) War, First and Second World Wars, Korean War, Afghanistan, and as United Nations peacekeepers. contributions to this area’s military heritage.
In recognition of this strong military legacy and the close ties it has with Peterborough, the Hastings & Prince Edward Regiment Military Museum in Belleville is actively supporting the creation of a Branch Museum in Peterborough. To accomplish this, a local committee has been formed to raise funds, renovate a room in the Peterborough Amoury, procure furniture and equipment and collect artifacts and archival materials for displaying. The goal is to make a first-rate military museum for the Peterborough community.
If you wish to make a financial contribution (tax receipts will be issued upon request) to this community project, if you have an item that you wish to donate or loan to the museum in the future, or if you wish to assist in another way, please contact us.
